Tyre Fitting

Best to have tyres fitted by someone who cares. Tyre machines are powerful and can damage expensive wheels if not used professionally. We have recently revised our method of applying the sealant between the 2 rim sections to address the problem of sealant damage during tyre fitting. While we believe that we have made a significant improvement in this area, it will stay pay to fit tyres carefully, with minimal use of tyre levers.

Please note that Simmons wheels are designed for use with tubeless tyres only - do not fit tubes under any circumstances. Any wheel (not just Simmons) and tyre assembly which develops a leak needs to be thoroughly inspected to determine the cause of the leak. To simply install a tube to fix a leak may allow a serious problem with either the wheel or the tyre to go on developing. This can be dangerous. If you have reason to believe that your Simmons wheel is leaking, please contact Simmons Wheels in Sydney.

Cleaning

PorscheThe best thing for cleaning wheel centres is car washing detergent and water - just the same as you wash the rest of your car with. A bottle brush, or similar, is a help between the spokes. Some cleaning products can react with paint finishes – if you have any doubts, check your cleaning product on a small portion of the rear of the wheel, before proceeding.

Polished rims look great, but require tender and frequent care to keep looking that way. To preserve the polished surface, don’t leave the wheels to long in a dirty, or brake dusted condition. Once the polished surface starts to etch from exposure to dust or atmospheric pollutant, it can be difficult to restore. Use a quality, non abrasive metal polish such as "Simmons Wheel Polish". Do not use anything containing caustic soda or any abrasive product.

Disassembly

Simmons wheels are assembled with a great deal of care, using procedures developed over many years. We strongly recommend that disassembly and re-assembly of Simmons Wheels should be carried out only by Simmons Wheels P/L or their authorised agents.

Simmons will not repair or replace any wheel or wheel component under any type of warranty condition, where it is found that the wheel has been disassembled by an unauthorised person or organization.

Repairs

Parts are available to replace and repair almost any Simmons wheels made since 1990. We can service many of our earlier wheels as well - please contact Retro Wheels in Australia. (see below)

Repair in most cases means replacement of damaged rim section.

Under no circumstances should damaged rims be "re-rolled". All Simmons rims are heat treated under manufacture to increase their tensile strength, hardness and fatigue resistance. While these characteristics significantly improve their performance and durability of the wheel, they can make it extremely difficult to accurately restore damaged rims to a workable condition and attempted re-rolling may create potential failure points in the alloy.

Welding rims is even worse. Welding heat will soften the alloy, reducing tensile strength to as little as 25% of the original specification.

Likewise, welding on cast centres sections will seriously reduce the tensile strength of the heat treated alloy and will probably lead to failure of the casting.

Repairs should only be carried out by Simmons Wheels in Sydney or by their authorised agents in Australia and overseas.

Please note that wheels returned for repair should have tyres removed and the contact details of the sender supplied.

Modifications

Modifying wheel widths and offsets is achieved by changing rim sections. Contact Simmons or their agents for advice or to discuss your requirements.

To modify centre castings by machining or drilling or by any other method can/will result in the wheels becoming unsafe. Welding rim sections or centre castings will almost guarantee that your wheel will fail. Welding drastically reduces the tensile strength of the heat treated components of the wheel – to the point where the wheel becomes unsafe and completely unfit for use on any car. Often it is more economic to purchase new wheels, rather than modify existing wheels.

Refurbishing

Retro Wheels in Australia offer a refurbishing service to restore Simmons Wheels to “as new” condition. Paint &/or powder coating is stripped from the centre casting, which is refinished as new.

Outer rim sections are repolished and minor marks removed. If marks are too deep to polish out, the rim may need to be replaced – we will advise you of this. Refurbished wheels are reassembled using new bolts and nuts and the wheel is then re-sealed for tubeless tyres.

Please note that all wheels returned for repair, modification or refurbishing must include the sender’s contact details.

Serial Numbers

All Simmons 3 Piece Wheels are engraved or stamped with a serial number for security purposes, traceability, or for ordering spare parts.

These numbers are recorded by Simmons and we recommend that our customers record them as well. They are effective in proving rightful ownership of wheels suspected of having been stolen.

If you need information on spare parts for your Simmons Wheels, quoting the serial number enables us to ascertain the original build specifications of your wheels.
